Cannabis in South Korea has a complex history, from traditional hemp use to strict criminalization under the Cannabis Control Act of 1976, influenced by global anti-drug movements and U.S. pressure. Despite global legalization trends, South Korea remains one of the strictest countries regarding cannabis use, even prosecuting citizens who consume it legally abroad. In 2018, South Korea became the first East Asian country to legalize medical cannabis, but only for specific conditions like epilepsy.
Public perception remains largely negative, though younger generations influenced by Western culture are becoming more open-minded. While mainstream weed culture is minimal, cannabis aesthetics occasionally surface in street fashion and pop culture, subtly blending global influences with local norms.
STATEMENT
My work blends cultural identity with bold visual storytelling, shaped by my experiences growing up between Seoul and the United States. I use graphic design to challenge norms and imagine alternative realities.
In my recent project, “K-Weed”, I envision a future where South Korea embraces cannabis culture, inspired by Los Angeles’ mainstream weed aesthetic. The zine challenges conservative views while exploring how modern influences might reshape tradition. Through my work, I aim to spark conversations and push design beyond aesthetics into social commentary.
